Because I Am Nebby

Ξ July 1st, 2009 | → 20 Comments | ∇ opinions |

Well, first things first. Do those of you not from the Pittsburgh area know what nebby means? (Basically nebbing means that someone is snooping in your business.)

OK, on to my question. I need to know when yinz tell people that you have a blog. And by people I mean new people you meet. New friends.

And go…

I might mention I blog if it comes up in conversation (like Why did you go to Kentucky?) but unless they flat out ask me for the site, I don’t give it to them.

It took me months to figure out what “nebby” means when I first moved here. What the hell is wrong with “nosey?” Huh? GAH!

I don’t tell people. Mind you, everybody on planet Earth freaking knows about mine, so it’s not like it would be a big revelation or anything. And by “everybody on planet Earth” I mean seriously, everybody. My neighbor who I’ve spoken to twice mentioned it to me during our second conversation. What. the. crap.

    1) nebby sounds cooler than nosey….and we like it better…

    2) you tell them when you are comfortable with them enough that you dont feel its an invasion if they do. The nice thing about a blog is the anonymity associated with it, hence you are able to pour it out so easily. If you are comfortable with a person you are getting to know reading what you post then go for it, if you want some more time dont. I dont think there is a “right” time, it all depends on who the person is, what kind of relationship is forming and how much of a glimpse into your head you want to give them. Bottom line though, this is you, take it or leave it…so they are going to find out about your dirty little secrets eventually, so if you arent comfortable with it now or feel you will be judged, prob a good indicator of future relationship potential.

If i were youd id say go for it…nothing to be ashamed of here, and if whomever this mystery person is finds this little chuck of you offensive or overwhelming…he/she can handle you anyway deary!!!

Oh, okay…wow, that took me a bit to translate. Hah.

I don’t bring it up unless it naturally comes up. I mean, not that I am ashamed or care if anyone knows but I guess I tend to compartmentalize.

Now then, if this is a new guy I may be dating, I’d probably tell him but not give him the URL until I was comfortable enough to share secrets with him anyway.

I’m the same way, in real life I have to be comfortable to tell them. But on the interwebz, I’ll tell anyone.

    Yea, I’m strange. That’s how I roll.

    I don’t.

Gia does. Then I shoot her a stern look and she promises not to disclose the name of my blog or the url.

    I like being semi-anonymous.

It all depends on the conversation. If it resolves around videos or food or something that naturally flows into somethings I’ve blogged about AND the person or people I’m talking with seem to have an interest in the conversation, then I bring up my blog and what I’ve done out there.

Funny… to me nebby is a adjective for nebbish, which is Yiddish (I think) for geek or nerd or something like that.

I don’t tell many people unless it comes up for whatever reason. Usually when someone asks me why I’m going to Orlando or Philly or something.

I generally don’t. I do tell super close friends, though. Or people who I know don’t give a shit. Either way, it’s rare i tell them the blog name/ URL.

    Nebby? Really?

You people have the most bizarre language.

And I never tell anyone about my blog.

But Adam can’t seem to keep his fucking mouth shut.

My blog isn’t the main topic of conversation with many people. My close friends and family know about it and a few of them read it. I trust them. The one person who has had the most trouble with my blog has been my mother and she no longer reads it and that keeps the peace between us.

If my blog comes up (usually my husband will mention it), then sure, whatever. But I preface it with the fact that I cut loose and if they read it and get offended, then they’ve been warned.

Nebby is an Indiana word too. I had no idea what it meant until someone explained it to me. I thought it was dirty. >:)

I might mention I have a blog but don’t give out the URL all that often.

I rarely mention my blog. If blogging comes up in conversation — if someone else mentions theirs — I might mention mine then, but rarely otherwise.
